I am 30 years old. And as far as I can remember, I draw, although there are no artists in my family. At one time I even graduated from art school, but I never considered drawing a way to make money. For me, this is rather a hobby, a way of spiritual enrichment, and not work.
Now I work as a merchandiser. I love my job because I am quite an active person and she does not let me sit still. In my free time I paint.
About hobby cartoons
About seven years ago I began to get involved in portraits in the style of popart and cartoons. Drew them as a gift to friends and relatives. And then word of mouth worked: friends told their friends, someone just accidentally saw my work on the Internet. As a result, at some point I realized that people appreciated my work and are ready to pay for it, and began to accept orders. For me, cartoons are like solving a crossword puzzle for some or building a puzzle. I see a person’s face, learn about his habits, work, favorite things, hobbies or dreams, and with the help of colors I put together a kind of puzzle on paper.
It all starts with communication with the client. We are talking about the person you want to draw. In conversation and the concept of a cartoon is born. Sometimes customers call such little things that the picture is folded by itself. Well, very important photos and how they reflect the essence of the one who is depicted on them.
About the first cartoon
The first person I painted was the director from my first job – at that time I was a bartender. Colleagues decided that the cartoon will be a great gift by February 23. For me it was very exciting: the first cartoon to order, and even for the chief! We thought over the idea for a long time, and for a long time I gathered my strength, but in the end everything turned out perfectly. Cartoon boss really liked. And I earned, albeit a purely symbolic amount.
At first, only patience and a little bit of courage were needed to develop their business. Brushes and paints were already at hand. Costs started later when I decided to develop myself and grow my business.
Once I wanted to make a baby book as a gift to a friend (a book-album in which parents can record all the important stages of a child’s development). It turned out to be so fascinating that I wanted to develop in this direction. I began to attend courses, trainings and in the process create new handmade items for myself.
About customers and their wishes
My customers are different people. Different gender, age and social status. In 90% of cases they turn to me to make a gift. Painted circles and T-shirts, cartoons and photo boxes (photo album box for storing photos) are in the greatest demand. Mugs and T-shirts with a pair of patterns are ordered as a gift to the newlyweds, caricatures are often ordered to a manager or colleague.
About favorite and unusual orders
Several times I was asked to paint the car, but I refused: for this you need to work in a special drawing technique, which I do not own. Once I had to paint the walls of a children’s room with images of heroes from the cartoon “Madagascar”. It was very interesting, and I and my clients were satisfied with the result.
It is difficult to single out one favorite order. But most of all I love to draw children. They are always so sincere and emotional! I have a customer with whom I have already drawn the whole family. When a person returns for another order for their loved ones, it is especially valuable for me. It seems that I personally know each member of the family.
